U. S. Bulk Silver Coins

All half dollars, quarter dollars and dimes produced by the U.S. Mint until and including the year 1964 were made of a 90% silver and 10% copper mixture. After 1964 almost all U.S.coins were produced with no silver content. These 90% silver coins are commonly referred to as "junk silver". Silver coins are sold by the "bag" which consists of a face value of $1000.00 regardless of the denomination (dime, quarter, or half) of coin. A bag of silver weighs approximately 55 pounds and contains a gross weight of 800 troy ounces. This yields a pure silver content of approximately 715 troy ounces. The price of these bags is determined by multiplying the spot price of silver by the pure content and adding the current market premium. During a stable market the "bag of junk silver" is usually the best silver buy available. We also carry special bags of coins consisting of either "mercury" dimes, walking liberty half dollars, uncirculated Kennedy halves, or Franklin halves.

Beginning in 1965 and continuing through 1970 the half dollars were composed of a 40% silver and 60% copper-nickel alloy. These are referred to as "clad halves". Bags of clad halves weigh slightly less than silver halves and their pure silver content is approximately 295 troy ounces.

U. S. Silver Eagles

Since late 1986 the United States Mint at West Point has been producing one troy ounce .999 fine silver coins known as Silver Eagles with a face value of one dollar.    These are the first silver dollars produced in the U.S. on a regular basis since the 1930's. The Silver Eagle has become the most popular form of silver investment for the majority of our customers.  The Eagle is available in both uncirculated and proof versions.  The uncirculated coins are packaged in plastic tubes of 20 each   with 25 tubes per case for a total of 500 coins per case.  The proof Silver eagles are double-struck on polished planchets and come packaged in a plastic capsule which is in turn placed in a velvet presentation box.  The price of each year's issue depends on the number of coins produced for that year.  The proof coins are worth considerably more than the uncirculated versions.

Silver Bars

Silver is produced in rectangular bar or ingot form in sizes ranging from less than one ounce to one thousand troy ounce bars.  The most common sizes for investors are one ounce, five ounce, ten ounce, and one hundred ounce rectangular bars and one ounce rounds.   Silver comes in a variety of other sizes, shapes and weights too numerous to list here.  The most important factors to consider in purchasing silver bars are the hallmark, fineness and premium.  Buy bars produced by well-recognized refiners and well-marked as to purity and weight.  In this country the leading producers are Engelhard and Johnson-Matthey.  Silver must be marked with an exact weight in troy ounces and a purity of at least 99.9% pure or ".999 fine" .  When purchasing any precious metals, always choose properly labeled well-known products which will be easily sold when that  time comes.  Finally, try to find bars with the lowest "premium" or cost above the spot price of silver.

Canadian Silver Coins

The mainstay of the Canadian silver coins is the Canadian Silver Maple.  Similar to the gold and platinum issues, the Silver Maple contains one ounce of pure silver.   In fact, the Silver Maple is the only coin struck from .9999 pure silver.  The Maple is issued every year with the current date and a few years have produced special, limited editions.  We usually stock the current year's coins as well as some of the earlier issues.

Mexican Silver Coins

The main silver coin from Mexico is the one ounce Libertad or Onza which is minted each year in one ounce of .999 fine silver.  We carry these beautiful coins on an in-stock basis; whatever date is on hand at the time of an order.  The older dates are a very affordable way to own silver coins.
